Artist Statement
There are two distinct landscapes that we maneuver through in our lifetime. They are the exterior landscape that is defined by our physical placement on this earth and by the range of our peripheral vision, and the vast interior landscape that defines and helps to map our inner journey through life as physiological and emotional beings on this earth. These two worlds are inseparable. Our external landscape, the world around us, cues our emotional state of being, but it is the vast interior that offers us space, infinite possibilities and choices that ultimately form our reality.
My exterior Plein Air landscapes (oil and gouache on paper) are portraits; small, intimate expressions of a deep love and reverence for this planet. My large multi-media pieces are an exploration into the uncharted territory of my interior, and are basically created by pondering over forces of this universe which shape us as human beings. The larger pieces are approximately 75 inches by 111 inches and the small pieces are approximately 38 inches by 74 inches. These works, mostly done on handmade rice paper, are created by incorporating several different processes; using actual body tracings of myself and my loved ones, using a process called frottage, and then further enhancing the images with a combination of graphite, crayon, ink, gouache, and traditional block printing techniques. As with the above-mentioned landscapes, these two very distinct bodies of work are created in unison which help define one another and cannot be separated.
I have always been intrigued with the curious dichotomy of energy that defines my reality. Standing before ‘the world’ with brushes in hand I feel so small and vulnerable, a tiny, irrelevant speck on this planet. But then, turning to my interior world where there are no boundaries, I am formless with those offerings of infinite possibilities: life choices, curiosity, and courage to become whomever I wish.
